Moon Phase Slider

As many of you may know the Islamic calander is based on the cycles of the moon, hence the Lunar calendar. This was the inspiration behind our name, Lunar Learners. So to honor the upcoming launch of Lunar Learners first 3 books in The Prophet Series, we will be sharing a few moon related crafts.

This moon phase slider is simple to make and would serve as a great craft to accompany conversation around Ramadan and the Islamic Lunar calendar.

This could be a unique craft to do in your childs’ classroom when talking about Ramadan. We have provided some book recommendations below that you could use to facilitate conversation around the moon, Ramadan and the use of the Lunar calendar in Islam.

This is a good activity to to get children engaged and excited about Ramadan. Be sure to let us know if you try this and don’t forget to tag us at #lunarlearners so we can see your creations.

Supplies:

To start with you will need:

  • Three rectangular pieces of card (we used these colors and dimensions. White: 5” x 3.5”, Blue: 5” x 4.5”, Black: 7” x 3.5”black, white and blue)

    • Width of black and white piece should be the same. The blue piece should be slightly larger.

    • Length of blue and white piece should be the same. The black piece should be slightly longer.

  • Something circular to draw around (which will be the size of your moon, I used a stacking cup from my kids toys)

  • An extra piece of card that can fit the circular object you chose for the moon.

  • Small piece of foil, slightly larger than the circle you are using for the moon.

  • Pen/pencil

  • Scissors

  • Glue

Step 1:

  • Draw around your round object on a separate piece of card and cut out. Cover with the foil. This will be the moon.

  • Draw the same size circle in the center of the blue card and cut out.

Step 2:

  • Draw the same size circle on the white card

  • Stick the moon onto the white card where you drew the circle.

Step 3:

  • Place the blue card over the white card, so that the moon aligns with the cut out circular opening. The blue card should hang over the edge of the white card.

  • Fold over the sides of the blue card and glue down.

Step 4:

  • There should be an opening between the white and blue card. Slide in the black piece of card. (Note: if this piece is snug, trim the card a little until it slides easily.

Step 5:

  • The black card will stick out at each end. Cut these edges to form a curve.
